Children who come in for counseling and children of divorce frequently express anger inappropriately
because they do not know how to express their emotions safely.
There are several things you can do to help your child learn to manage his anger. First, accept that anger is normal. It is a secondary emotion that comes from hurts and fears and other negative emotions. It is necessary for protection. Ask your child: "What is causing your anger?" "What other feelings do you have?" "What can you do about the problem?" "How can I help you?"
Listen to what your child has to say. It is important. It helps to calm the child. Listening shows that you care. It is a form of love. Interrupt and ask for a softer voice if needed. Send him to his room for a timeout if needed. Repeat what your child says in a similar tone of voice to show your child you understand at least a little of his concerns. Ask questions, like the ones suggested above. Save advice until after you have listened. If there will be negative consequences for the child's continued behavior, give the child a warning about what may happen. Most of all, be kind.
Problems at home, at school or with friends can contribute to your child's anger. It is important to be a "safe" person for your child, so he will feel safe sharing his thoughts and experiences with you. A "safe" person listens, reflects, does not react negatively, encourages the child, and offers positive alternative thoughts and options. A "safe" person knows how to "make lemonade out of lemons."
We have written a book for parents to read with their children to help teach them the fundamentals of
emotional control, and anger management. Originally, it was for children, but adults and teens are
also asking for it. We call it:
"THE ANGER BOOK FOR KIDS"
Where does rage come from? It comes from your deeper feelings! Are you ever afraid? Do you ever feel lonely and unloved? Do people ignore you? Would you like for people to listen to you more?
This book will:
Written with Bible references to demonstrate each feeling and God's love for you, this book will help you see yourself the way God sees you.
